Panel 1: Major developments occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries when Brighton prospered as a fashionable health resort. Today, the hotel's Victorian façade with its 1956 extension - which improved the interior accommodation but hardly embellished the venerable frontage - bears little semblance to the original structure. Under the ownership of the Bacon family for over one and a quarter centuries, they carried out a lot of the internal and external remodelling of the hotel, which remains today.

Panel 4: Adjacent to the staff entrance is also one leading to the magnificent ballroom built in the mid-18th century (then, the largest in Brighton), replete with spectators and musicians galleries. In 1831 the famous virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini played there.
